Martyn Rhys Vaughan has delivered another doorstopper-sized book with a central story, or stories that never flag, even as he introduces a host of often oddball characters and marshalls all of the trials and travails of very long distance space travel. It’s a huge achievement, not least pulling off what might be the most simple and essential quality of speculative fiction of this ambition, namely making it all believable.
